Essential Med investigates Strange Health Myths

health insuranceFrom old wives' tales to bizarre folklore, there are a number of strange health myths out there. Health insurance providers, Essential Med, help to debunk some of the most common ones:

Never ever wake up a sleepwalker

This tired myth decrees that individuals caught sleepwalking should never, under no circumstances, be woken from their sleep. If a sleepwalker is awakened, the myth dictates that the shock to their system can cause serious injury in the form of heart failure and other hazards. Unsurprisingly, this is a complete fable. If worst comes to worst, the sleepwalker will appear groggy and may be angry with you, but life-threatening? – Not at all.

Cracking your knuckles leads to arthritis

First things first; it helps to understand what happens when you ‘crack' your knuckles. The crack you hear is not the sound of popping joints or grinding bones – rather, the noise originates from the popping of the tiny gas bubbles which can appear in the fluid in the joints of your fingers. Worst case scenario – you annoy the person sitting next to you at work.

Cold weather makes you sick

Chances are, this myth has been drilled into your head since childhood – autumn and winter are flu season, after all. It's time you learnt the truth: studies show that a drop in mercury doesn't directly affect your health. Rather, catching the flu is a result of spending too much time indoors where you breathe the same air and touch the same surfaces as your colleagues or family.

Smoking marijuana lowers your IQ

This is a tricky one. Studies have shown that regular marijuana smokers between the ages of 13 and 18 – a crucial period in the brain's development – may experience a significant IQ drop of at least eight points. Alternatively, a 25-year study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences revealed that habitual marijuana smokers over the age of 18 didn't lose a single IQ point over the course of the study.

Sitting too close to the TV will ruin your vision

Sitting too close to the television won't ruin your eyesight, but sitting less than 1.5 metres from the screen can tire that muscles that focus the lens of the eye. This usually results in eyestrain and tired eyes that may burn and water. Make sure to leave a smart distance between your seating position and the television screen and give your eyes a break by refocusing your gaze during breaks.
Is your health an issue? Protect your health and your wallet with excellent health insurance and hospital plans offered by Essential Med.

What is epilepsy

The ultimate symptom of epilepsy is the epileptic seizure itself. Seizures have a beginning, a middle and an end - the beginning is known as an ‘aura’ or warning, the middle is the convulsive seizure and the end is the transition from seizure to normal state. Individuals who are about to suffer a seizure may experience the following warning signs:

  •     A feeling of déjà vu (The illusion of remembering events when actually experienced for the first time)
  •     Visual loss or blurring
  •     Racing thoughts
  •     Tingling feeling throughout body
  •     Dizziness or a headache
  •     Light-headedness
  •     Nausea
  •     Numbness

Southern Right Whales

Every June, Southern Right Whales stop by South African shores for a visit until November. During this period, they gather in the San Sebastian Bay; a safe haven for them to congregate with their young and have their own holiday in our waters. Here the whales breed and calve, providing some of the best whale watching in the world.

In addition to whales, the area provides visitors with a large array of animal life including dolphins, wild cats, birds and buck. Just a few km away is the Mudlark River Lodge located within the Lower Breede River Conservancy on the banks of the Breede River itself The lodge provides the best of the Breede; from comfortable accommodation to guided fishing trips, bird-watching and, of course, whale watching. With scores of satisfied customers, Mudlark River Lodge should be where you stay to explore this wonderfully secluded and tranquil part of South Africa.

Robertsons Prawn Soup

A soup is the staple of any winter menu; a delicious combination of ingredients blended together to make a delightfully warm meal on a cold night. One of our favourite recipes is a Thai prawn soup that combines subtle hints of coconut milk, lemon grass and spices into one remarkably flavoursome dish. The preparation involved is quick and easy – unbelievably so, as one would expect something this tasty to require hours of work.

A portrait of Camps Bay

Camps Bay emerges on the Atlantic Seaboard as a palm-lined boulevard set adjacent to a pale blue bay. Not unlike a screenshot of vintage Los Angeles glamour, Camps Bay is a hub of desirable activity where the clinking of festooned cocktail glasses and the hum of buoyant banter combine with the euphonious whispering of the icy-blue waves.

Set within easy distance of luxury accommodation in Bantry Bay, the affluent suburb is the epitome of a true Cape Town experience. Attracting international visitors and glamorous Capetonians alike, the busy streets of Camps Bay teem with trendy cafes, bars and restaurants that beckon passer-by’s to partake in general revelry, crisp wine spritzers and fragrant seafood platters. From fine dining establishments to quirky sidewalk cafes, Camps Bay rolls out the metaphorical red carpet for all celebrations.

Despite glitz and palpable glamour, Camps Bay remains a casual, leisurely location just as suitable for families with children as it is for international jetsetters and honeymooners. Mirroring luxury accommodation in Llandudno, Camps Bay accommodation varies from high-luxury villas to stylish executive apartments set facing the azure horizon. Set just 15 minutes away from the cosmopolitan City Bowl and internationally lauded V&A Waterfront, basing your holiday in Camps Bay allows for ultimate convenience and safe, straightforward travel routes.

SA product improves the lives of Chinese children

More than 300 rural Chinese children recently had their hearts checked courtesy of a revolutionary product developed by a Stellenbosch-based company.

Diacoustic Medical Devices produces Sensi Cardiac, a computer-based system allowing doctors to accurately distinguish between innocent and possibly dangerous heart murmurs in children. Heart murmurs are notoriously difficult to diagnose accurately, so many children with perfectly innocent murmurs are often referred to heart specialists for a second opinion, with obvious emotional and cost implications for both child and family.

Sensi Cardiac can analyse a patient’s heart murmur with an accuracy of 90%, making it the most accurate system of its kind in the world. “Sensi is of particular value to rural doctors and in rural clinics where specialist services are less available, as all it requires is an electronic stethoscope plugged into a laptop, computer or tablet, and an ECG device,” explained Thys Cronjé, director of Diacoustic Medical Devices.

Life Cover

Have you considered taking out life cover but aren’t sure whom to nominate as your near and dear one? Are you fighting a losing battle trying to get the attention of the fairer sex and air punching out of frustration because you haven’t yet found someone that you can spend your life with?

It may be that you are not focused on getting yourself into shape. You are probably thinking that it’s far better to settle with your barrel than with a six pack. Or you are hiding behind the excuse that girls go for personality and not looks? Yes, it’s important to be a nice guy, but being a nice, good looking guy will surely get the girls to take more notice of you – guaranteed.

Not everyone can have the body of a Greek god, but there are a few things you can do to enhance your physical appearance and appeal, such as building muscles girls will swoon over.

For starters, be realistic. Set yourself an achievable goal. To think that exercising for a week or two will have you looking like a superstar is just not realistic. Be practical and take your lifestyle, time, and eating and drinking habits all into consideration and then decide on your medium to long-term objectives.

Although ladies find muscles attractive, it’s difficult to say which body parts they fancy the most, as they each do have unique tastes and favourites. But it is safe to say that most of them will be proud to have a gentleman at their side who has worked out and has fabulous muscles. For more visit FRANK.NET

Safety and Cover

Getting yourself covered has to be one of the most fundamental and necessary financial moves we all need to make at one point or another. It's part of growing up, most of us have to take over from our parents and this surely is a part of every responsible adults duties.

So I have now decided to look into it myself and find something affordable to at least give me some peace of mind. After looking into it I've decided to take out car insurance and life cover. Even cheap car insurance just to cover the basics will do.

Five South African beaches worth a visit

The coastal areas of South Africa play host to a multitude of exciting adventure activities, such as cage diving in Gansbaai or racing down the sand dunes in Cape Town. In short; the beach front is where you will want to be. As summer winds down into mild autumn weather the beaches will soon be visited less, but until then, here is a list of five great beaches to visit around the country:

1. Clifton Beach
One of the Mother City’s favourite beach spots, the strip of Clifton beaches numbered one to four is where you go to do one of two things: lounge in the sun or surf the waves. The icy water is not ideal for swimming, but many individuals brave the cold temperatures to escape the hot African sun. Cape Town boasts a plethora of beautiful beaches, and other notable beach sites to visit include Muizenberg, Kalk Bay, the nudist Sandy Beach as well as Bloubergstrand.

2. Jeffery’s Bay
Home to the biggest, most exhilarating waves, Jeffery’s Bay is an earthly paradise to every surfing enthusiast. As the unofficial surfing capital of the country, it’s no surprise that this alcove happened to be the main filming location for the sequel to the successful surfing film, Blue Crush.

3. Grotto Beach
This picturesque beach in Hermanus is a favourite for whale watching. It is easily accessible and hosts a range of spectacular restaurants and beach facilities, all pleasantly set against cascading white dunes and a grassy mountain side.

4. Durban
This coastal port city of KwaZulu Natal plays host to a number of vibrant, colourful beaches. Along the East coast of South Africa runs the warm current of the Indian Ocean and the beaches dotted along Durban’s coast offer pleasantly warm waters.

5. Gansbaai
Known as South Africa’s hub for great white shark cage diving, this quaint coastal area also offers svelte stretches of white sandy beach peppered with huge dunes and mountainous hillsides.

A world of hospitality opportunities

At the time of a global economic recession, hotel management courses became one of the most popular electives at tertiary education institutions the world over. The speculation about why this is so centred around the fact that careers in the hospitality industry, such as hotel management or working as a chef in the hotel’s restaurant, open up doors to so many opportunities. The possibilities of where a young graduate could go with a qualification in hospitality are endless.

Accommodation in Green Point

If you are coming to Cape Town for a holiday, green point accommodation is definitely by far one of the best places to stay as it is within walking distance to the V&A Waterfront.  Green Point is one of the best places to be in if you are in Cape Town as it has all the best attractions nearby.

With FZP they also offer you discounted package tours as well as they always have special offers available. The best part about it is that if you are coming down for one or two weeks you can choose the green point holiday rentals, which is much cheaper than booking into a hotel. Green Point is surrounded by restaurants, lively pubs and coffee bars.

My family and I came down from Johannesburg for a holiday and I came across FZP’s website and was very impressed with all they had to offer. We chose the green point holiday rentals as we were staying for two weeks. My family had never been to Cape Town before so by having all the best attractions nearby it really helped a lot as we could even walk to the V&A Waterfront.

For those of you that are coming down to Cape Town I highly recommend you going through FZP as they have a lot to offer and have holiday apartments in Green Point and their prices and services are outstanding.

Life insurance

While you have to make tough decisions about what to sacrifice and what to prioritise, there are some things you'll need to do for yourself to ensure financial protection, such as acquiring an insurance policy such as life cover.

Not only do these insurance companies have helpful agents who are the perfect candidates to explain anything you need to know about insurance products but they can also help you take out insurance over the phone.

Life insurance provides a great way way to get ready for these events, as it pays out cash that can be spent on whatever your beneficiaries deem necessary.

Insurance is extremely important because it protects your money and, in turn, your quality of life.

Cape Tow Transport

One of the scariest parts of travelling to another city, especially one as highly populated as Cape Town, is figuring out how to get around.

For those who prefer to drive themselves around, services such as Cape Town airport car hire are available as well.

If a roadtrip is on the cards, it is possible to drive the hired car from the Western Cape to the Johannesburg airport car hire and then fly back to avoid driving the considerably long route twice.

Helicopter Tour Cape Town

I was once lucky enough to take a helicopter flight as part of a tour of Cape Town and it was an experience that changed my view of a city that has been my home for the majority of my life.

They had asked me recommend several tours of Cape Town which as I had not been back for very long did with little enthusiasm and even less knowledge, a helicopter flight did not even cross my mind, as far as tours of Cape Town were concerned I was not even aware that this was possible.

What a helicopter tour of Cape Town provides is a renewed sense of appreciation for my home town.

The helicopter flight with NAC Makana took us on a tour of Cape Town the likes of which you can only imagine.

If you are going for a Logitstics Job in Cape Town you need to have the perfect dress, and what better way that to buy a cocktail dress and formalize it with a neat jacket. Rather look good and make that first impression than not making the effort.
Another tip for those looking for entertainment jobs in Cape Flats I would suggest looking at the Pretty Dresses that Mr Price has on offer. There are some really stunning dresses that will wow the potential employer.
